Framing your rolled canvas art print

Congratulations on buying a rolled canvas art print. The beauty of having a print on canvas is that the texture is true to the original. This is a real work of art and deserves to be framed beautifully.

Your rolled canvas will normally be delivered in a sturdy eco cardboard postal tube as shown above (that's the artist) although the very largest size might arrive carefully flat-packed.

We recommend that all artworks be framed professionally. However, not all of us live near a city or framing center so we might need to do our own picture framing. Luckily most of us have access to online shopping and prints that you purchase from yourwallswow.com all come in standard frame sizes.

Your rolled canvas might need a couple of moments to smooth flat before you begin the framing process. This one has only been out of its tube for 30 seconds.

A list of things to have to hand before you start:

  • cutting mat
  • craft knife or scissors
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • double sided tape
  • screwdriver
  • frame

Method :

Find the top of the art print (my artist initials are on the lower right edge) then turn it over keeping the top at the top - always double check before trimming. Place the frame backer, which you've already removed by bending the metal pieces upwards with a screwdriver, inner side down onto the back of your art print. Mark a line where the trim needs to go. NB: your art print should be centered on the paper but it might not be - please double check before marking up and trimming.

Add double sided tape to the inner back board round the edges. If you are framing the 9 x 12" canvas print, this will be sufficient. If you are framing one of the larger canvas prints, you should put an extra strip or two either side of the center. If you purchase the extra large print, I recommend having it done professionally, but if you want to do your own framing, you can stick the canvas onto a piece of white card first (this takes the sagging out) and then use double sided tape to stick that to the backing board.

Now you need to place your canvas print face down onto a table then remove the top paper off the double sided tape. Carefully line up the top of the board to the top of the print. Lay the whole board flat and turn over to the front. Smooth the canvas starting in the middle at the top to release any air bubbles.

At this stage you decide on the look you prefer. Do you like your print as is, or do you want to put on a plain mount and glass? The image above is 'au naturel' and I like it because you can see the canvas texture better than if it had glass on top. If you use a mount, you would need to have one cut with the same size border as the print + 1mm so that you don't lose as much of the image.

This image shows the canvas print with a mount and glass:
